Family Travel France: Pyrenees Photo - Highest Train Ride
April 01, 2011
When we stayed in beautiful Colliore where the Pyrenees meet the sea in Catalan territory, we decided to take the special and unique Yellow train ( Le Train Jaune) from Villefranche de Conflent to the high Pyrenees ( Pyrenees-Orientales). We were there in July, but there was still some snow on the tops of the mountains. The yellow train is a not just a tourist train, but a regular train that has been running for over 100 years and the highest train ride in France.
It is a fun excursion for the whole family with spectacular views winding through the mountains a mile high. We got off in this high valley to see the Unesco World Heritage Site, Mont-Louis which was built by the famous French architect, Vauban. This was our beautiful view as we walked from the train to France's highest fort. Lovely, don't you think?

Don't know how we missed this one- we love train rides (maybe next trip) We did do Jungfraujoch in the Berner Oberland, but this looks more like our favorite SW Colorado- will look forward to more pictures!

This looks like a beautiful train ride. I've almost never met a train ride I didn't like.

Thanks Christine! It's really a lovely and special area that most miss.
The village of Villefranche de Conflent is also spectacular and I must post my pics and stories about this area.
We have more stories to tell than time to tell them ;)

Melissa- I thought about you guys when I posted this since you recently said you loved the Swiss Alps & I wondered if you went here on your journeys.
We loved this area, but will have to compare them to the Swiss Alps this year. ;)

Thanks Sonya! The yellow train is special and even has cars without a ceiling on them so you can see the scenery better.
