BIG Rats in Asia!
July 07, 2012

Living in Asia, one often sees the unexpected. World travel isn't always thrilling, sometimes one must deal with spiders, snakes, bugs, mosquitos, wild dogs and rats!
I know the photo is blurry, but I think I was squealing and running a bit when I took it. Luckily, we don't have to deal with this in our beautiful rental condo in Penang, but because there is so much cooking outside at Hawker Markets here and South East Asia, BIG rats are a common sight.
I am NOT a big fan of rats or mice and didn't want it to come bite me, but thought I should try to get a photo for all of you. Thankfully, it is not an every day occurance and although DaVinci and Mozat have seen quite a few ( even one at her Mandarin school ..which has lots of outside spaces!), this was my first. My 84 year old Mom was with us for 6 weeks last winter and did lots of walking about and exploring and did not see one.
Have you ever seen a big rat while traveling?

I have only seen a couple here in Shanghai--I used to see them all the time wneh we lived in NYC!

Funny Meghan, I lived in NYC and never saw one...and I biked, walked and roller skated every where at all hours of the day and night.
But I don't doubt there are plenty there and in most cities.
Interestingly, Asia is the only place that we have seen them on our travels ( quite a few here in Penang) but I am sure they are everywhere. Yuck!

Yeah, I saw a few when I lived in Saigon. Sometimes the rats were the same size as small puppies!
What's more the cockroaches were also so big that my boyfriend once mistook one for a rat :-(

Looks like one of our Florida possums!

LOL, Brit! You are right, the cockroaches here ARE pretty scary too!! Thankfully, we have never had any in our homes here!
These are the things that keep us away from the street food..as we see most of the rats and cockroaches in those areas!

Was more afraid of the tap water being used to cook in on Koh Lanta then I was the rats or bugs.
Worst I saw was a man wipe his nose on his hand and then make roti dough. Rats and bugs etc are everywhere and are generally ok. However humans and germs *shudder*

Oh yeah, Sara, that makes sense. Rats and bugs just gross me out and in many ways Asia is not too clean, so I am happy to mostly cook my own food. ;)
