Best Places to Visit in Europe
September 13, 2013
What are the best places to visit in Europe? There are such a plethora of amazing destinations in Europe for European family vacations, it is almost impossible to narrow it down.
BEST EUROPEAN DESTINATIONS?
We've spent most of 6 years out of our 8 years of non-stop round-the-world travel, spending extended travel time motorhoming in Europe ( including learning Spanish in Spain) and as much as we've explored this beautiful continent, we can't wait to return for more.
DON'T MISS THE ICONIC CITIES OF EUROPE
Don't miss the popular iconic cities like London, Paris, Rome, and Barcelona , but remember to add slow travel and lesser known destinations to your itinerary or Europe road trip. Here are a few of our favorites:
CINQUE TERRE AND THE ITALIAN RIVIERA
Do see famous Venice , Florence and Tuscany as italy with kids is easy, but don't forget romantic Verona for the opera and time in the glorious Italian Riviera in Cinque Terre and Portofino.
PROVENCE AND SOUTH OF FRANCE
For more beauty, sublime sunny weather and fun, head to the French Riviera and Provence for enchanting things like canoeing Pont du Gard, biking French vineyards, and stunning horses in the Camargue. Having spent time in Nice, Arles, Nimes, Gordes, Colliore, Narbonne, Avignon, Luberon and more, we can't wait to return for French immersion and free kids clubs.
GORGEOUS GALICIA IN SUMMER
Southern Spain is divine, as is the Costa Brava, and so much of our beloved Spain, ( like Seville, Granada's Alhambra, Madrid, Jerez Horse Fair, Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, etc) but if you travel to Spain in summer, we highly recommend that you visit northern Spain, especially Galicia and perhaps even walk a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
SANTORINI AND THE GREEK ISLANDS
We so loved Santorini that we stayed over a month, but also loved Rhodes, Crete, Mykonos, Samos and all the Greek Islands with kids along with amazing places on the mainland like Olympia, Mycenae, the many museums ,the Acropolis and Parthenon in Athens and the exquisite ancient ruins. If you skip high season July and August, Greece rocks for family travel.
NORWAY FJORDS AND SCANDINAVIA
Summer in Scandinavia is idyllic and Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark are all wholesome destinations.especially when you have friends in Sweden like we do who spoil us with things like cooking reindeer meat in a kota, foraging for mushrooms and time on a farm. We even found ways to do Norway fjords on a budget!
DUBROVNIK AND CROATIA
Dubrovnik is another place we fell in love with and stayed over a month, then found endless enchantments in Croatia like Rovinj, Plitvice Park, Korcula, Split, Dalmation coast as well as visiting nearby Ljubljana and Lake Bled or Montenegro and Kotor Riviera
SINTRA PORTUGAL
Pena Palace in Sintra was our favorite castle in Europe and we enjoyed many spots in Portugal like Cabo de Roca, Evora, Obidos, Lisbon, Oporto and Dorhou Valley as well as swimming with dolphins in the Algarve.
ROMANTIC ROAD
We love learning while traveling all over Europe and the many historical sites and enactments like this one in Rothenburg ob der
Tauber, ( famous for Christmas markets too) on the Romantic Road in Germany. Yum, we also enjoyed learning about chocolate making in Koeln

So many amazing places to see! I was wondering 2 things. Do you have a blog to recommend about saving money in Scandinavian countries (I hear they can be really expensive)? And Do you limit how many attractions you see when you are visiting a new place? I know it can be quite costly to visit the major attractions and wanted to know how you stay on budget and see some of these great places?
Thank you for sharing your life and wisdom!
