Travel and Paleo/Primal, Grain Free, GAPS/WAPF Healthy Eating
January 08, 2014
Can you travel the world and eat healthy on a very non-standard diet like Paleo, Vegan, WAPF, GAPS and eat organic plus all unprocessed foods, no sugar, bad fats or conventionally grown meats, eggs or dairy? Meanwhile living on a very tight budget and a super minimalist life, thus traveling with little luggage?
Trust me, it is a challenge, but can be done! I will be writing more details about how we do this but here are a few keys that work for us on our healing journey:
KEEP IT SIMPLE
MAKE PICNICS - EVEN FOR PLANE RIDES OR ROAD TRIPS
CONNECT WITH LOCAL FARMERS
ADJUST YOUR DIET TO WHAT IS CHEAP AND HEALTHY IN EACH AREA
PLAN AHEAD
USE THE INTERNET TO CONNECT WITH COMMUNITIES ONLINE THAT EAT LIKE YOU IN EACH AREA
HAVE DELICIOUS FOOD HANDY SO YOU ARE NOT TEMPTED
It is actually fun, easy, educational and entertaining to connect with local farmers. Before we left Asia recently, I googled things like LocalHarvest and Eat Wild and found farmers in places we'd be in order to get the food we'd need. I did similar online sleuthing before we went to Australia recently.
This photo was taken at Nikki Farms in Fresno, California where we got LOTS of organic pastured eggs and a few Mandarin oranges. It really feels good to know exactly where your food is coming from, meet folks passionate about healthy food, sustainable living and make new friends!
How do you meet special dietary needs while traveling?

We always pack a cooler or brown bag and water bottle. Thanks for the links to local harvest and eat wild. Have already used them to find a raw milk dairy here in Co. You are the "eat healthy while travelling guru"!Your posts on finding healthy food are sooo helpful.

Thanks so much Robyn, I love being called the "eat healthy while travelling guru"!!
I am really happy to hear that it is helpful and will be writing more on this topic.
We've always eaten basically healthy on our 8 years of travel, but since I've been dealing with a health issue and we are all on a very tight diet, I have had to become extremely resourceful and creative to make this work.
It is harder on the move and in foreign lands, but I am thrilled that I have found ways and actually it is not as hard as I thought. AND we eat delicious food!
Like most things, just using a bit of creativity to solve problem.

Its so very important to keep eating habits and eating stuff in mind while travelling to ensure that you do not end up with health problems and screw up the trip. I like the idea of your post and completely agree to the importance it tries to bring the fact onboard. Thanks!

This is always a consideration for us although we do not travel much right now. But...even a two hour drive to a specialist dentist involves the necessity of preparing something suitable to eat on route. WE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT EAT FAST FOOD! We stay home a lot other than working part time and always bring lunch from home. I shudder to think what we would find to eat if we traveled often. I think the US is a food desert, more so, of course, in the Winter.
Maybe it is slowly starting to change. I know that when we do drive 3 hours to the nice college town where our daughter lives, we will find lovely food there!
So....more power to the people who want clean, organic food!

I can't believe you guys were in Fresno! I live in Fresno and would have loved to meet up with you :) I feel like I know you even though I don't, from reading so much about you guys :)

So true Abdul and I will be writing a lot more on this topic!

I hear you Caterina! It is definitely more of a challenge when traveling, but on the other hand I am surprised that we have been able to do easier than I expected.
The key is really planning ahead and keeping it simple.
So true too about how some areas are much harder than others.
Luckily with planning, we did great on our long road trip throughout the southwest.

So sorry we missed you Jessica! We will be back to Fresno at some point..likely this summer before heading to Europe..so perhaps we will get another shot. ;)
Since we have close relatives in Fresno ( it is where DaVinci is from) we will always return there from time to time.
So sooner or later we ought to get a chance to meet! ;)Send me an email via our contact page next time you see us heading to California.

Congrats for eating Paelo on your travels. I have been GF for 10 years now and have found it at time frustrating to to travel with, now i have gone dairy free which isn't too hard. Next step is going full Paelo, I think this will be quite hard in Asia but you have inspired me to give it a go, so thanks

Thanks Jaryd, it is definitely a challenge in Asia, but can be done.
We couldn't find grass-fed beef where we were in Asia, but we could find pastured chickens from one source and pastured eggs, plus lots of organic veggies and cheap tumeric and ginger.
I miss the great coconut milk and super cheap pastured eggs I could get there..so those things helped a lot for us.

I am working my way through your blog and am finding the food posts extremely helpful. My 3 children all have food allergies (different/overlapping ones w/ one another) so traveling and food is something I have become a sort of expert on. We pack a lot and plan ahead. Wherever we go I research grocery stores/markets ahead of time. We all feel so much better eating our "regular foods" while traveling anyway. I need my yogurt and granola daily and we all need plenty of fresh/organic fruits and veggies. Our bodies can then handle the occasional restaurant splurge better that way :)
Again thanks for sharing your knowledge and research...after all health is wealth! And armed with healthy diet information makes all so rich!

Thanks Michelle, so happy to hear this! It does add a challenge to travel if one is on a strict diet, but we have found ways to enjoy as it seems you have too! ;)
