We recently did a road trip from Los Angeles to Mammoth Mountain and were simply amazed by the beauty of this state. This 300+ mile trek can be done in one day as a day trip from LA or a weekend or longer excursion and it is an easy, scenic drive the whole way.
Even though we have seen so much of the world in our decade long round-the-world slow travel, we still find California one of the most beautiful places on this earth.
We’ve seen much of California over the years, driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles, up to Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt, and south to San Diego and into Mexico, along the gorgeous coasts like Big Sur and inland to Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, Yucca Valley and more.
But some how, we’d never done this drive and it is a stunning one.
We went to film a new music video for Mozart’s new original song “Fade Away”, so despite it being gorgeous, warm summer weather in California, there was still snow on the mountain top and people skiing. We needed some snow scenes and as always we were up for an adventure.
One can take the Golden State Freeway to the Antelope Valley Freeway toward the Mohave Desert. One sees mountains, flat desert, high desert and through Red Rock Canyon and onto Highway 395 through Owens Valley. Soon you are in Lone Pine which is closest to Mount Whitney which is the highest point in the continental USA at 14494 feet.
California and Mammoth Mountain is one of the few places on earth where one can snow ski on the July 4th weekend!
Also one of the few places on earth where you can ski in the morning and surf in the afternoon..both in just one day. California rocks! Mozart is lucky to be one of the few who has done skiing in Spain‘s Sierra Nevada as well as the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Two places you can ski and swim in the sea on the same day.
The top of Mammoth Mountain is over 11,000 Ft or over 3368 meters.
The pristine area of Mammoth Lakes is inviting and refreshing in every season.
The typical California ski town is charming, delightful and easy to get around in.
The lakes, forests, blue skies and mountains are a breath-taking combination.
There is just something about mountains and nature and alpine charms that make me smile. How about you?

What a beautiful place ! It must be so funny to go swim and ski the same day 🙂 California seems to be one of the most beautiful place in the World and my best prefers one in USA.
I live in the Alpes in France, near Switzerland, and it is one of the most beautiful place in France 😉 We cannot ski on Joly, or maybe only on Mont-Blanc but now we can go and walk on the mountains and we have so many lakes !
