Family Travel in Norway means not missing the Fjords, famous Flam and Bergen Railway and breathtaking scenery while doing Norway in a Nutshell on a bargain budget. We are big proponents of slow travel, but Norway is the most expensive country in Europe, so one way to keep to a tight family travel budget while there is to see a lot in a short amount of time.
Thankfully, the fantastic bus, train, and ferry
connections between Oslo and
Norway's stunning, pristine fjord country make this easy to do. We found early September to be the perfect time to do this as the crowds are gone, but weather is still nice.
We took this beautiful photo out our window while taking the fantastic, kid friendly and fun Flam Railway and have much to share yet on this topic. Writing our book and my still paralyzed, slowly healing arm has slowed me down a bit on the blog, but I will get to it as soon as I can.

What has been some of your favorite and impressive sceneries on your travels?
We took a short trip on the hurtigruten w/a stop in Bergen & on the Geiranger fjord, which is stunning & breathtaking. I’m not sure of the price difference, but it’s definitely worth checking out.

Becky-Thanks! There are quite a few ways to do it which makes it nice! We stayed several days and made up our own itinerary, but it’s amazing how much can be seen even in 24 hours.

THAT is the other key to cheap travel in Scndinavia…have generous friends! We had an awesome time staying in a friends cottage in Sweden that made our stay there magnificent!

The fjords are one reason why we want to visit Norway. It’s definitely on our list of to-go places!

I have to admit that Norway wasn’t high on my list. But after seeing many travel post about this country, it has moved up the list rather quickly.

I haven’t actually traveled to many countries before, it’s probably because we’re a big family (I have five siblings + 2 parents) so it’s gonna cost us a bomb to travel together. Recently, though, we had a holiday in Singapore. They don’t have mountains or waterfalls and all those natural wonders but some of the structures are amazing. We went to Henderson Bridge (it’s a huge wooden bridge where people jog and have picnics, it’s almost like a park on a bridge). However, I think the best part about SG is that since they value clean air a lot, the skies are always free of smog so you can just stare outside your window and watch the sunset, with all outlines of the sky clearly visible. Now, isn’t that priceles… 😀
Did you hear the lady singing at the waterfalls on your Flam rail trip?
I’m not a fan of cruises, but seeing the fjords from a cruise ship (& on a kayak trip) is one of my life-long highlights!

Free Online Adventure Games- Sounds sweet! Did you know a family with 8 kids (the youngest a baby) & small budget did a RTW trip for almost 2 years?
@Sandra Foyt- Saw the falls, but don’t remember any one singing. We did see the fjords by large ship as well, but did it as a daytrip! Lovely, but I think I would be bored to do it for days on end via ship as it felt just right mixing it up and finding quiet time away from crowds to explore this pristine area.

I am fortunate enough to be able to travel solo. This is one country on my list as soon as I can get rid of my “Asian” flu.
I’m going up there in late August to early September, taking the Hurtigruten ferry from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. Haven’t been up there in decades, although I’m expecting changes, I hope the landscape is still as beautiful as I (dimly) remember it.

I went to the fjords following a Hurtigruten cruise around Svalbard and was blown away by the beauty–not to mention affordability! Especially as I previously lived in Denmark and avoided Norway due to the insane cost factor!
