While most of America is
focused on the Super Bowl,
most of Asia could care less
While most of America is focused on the Super Bowl, most of Asia could care less as it is Chinese New Year here which is a huge holiday that lasts 15 days. All the people in Malaysia have been on vacation this past week and all of the schools, including our 10 year old daughter’s Mandarin high school, are off this week. Even European expats don’t care about the Super Bowl as it’s not as popular with the world as their football like we watched this past summer in Barcelona when Spain won the World Cup.
BENEFITS OF WORLD TRAVEL
One of the fabulous things about our 5 year open ended family world tour is that my very athletic husband who use to love sports like any all American boy, really could care less today. We’ve just gotten out of the habit of following them and other things take priority. They also happen at odd times overseas, so it’s not quite the same getting up in the middle of the night to watch a game live. Our one American neighbor in Spain did do that with satellite tv, but it never seemed worth it to DaVinci.

The Super Bowl kick off takes place very early Monday morning here in Penang… at dawn, so we’ll not pay too much attention to it, but if you are in Asia or abroad and interested here are a few possibilities:

Ha, two years ago I woke up at 6am at Ko Tao, Thailand because I am a Steelers girl and they were going to make history! (And did.) The main strange thing about it IRC was eating breakfast food instead of beers and pizza, no commercials on TV, and Thai announcers at halftime explaining how the game worked (namely me thinking how being a Thai American football announcer can’t be a job with too much competition!).
This year my dad and bro are actually at the game (!!!) but I drove to Pittsburgh yesterday after getting my M.S. degree in Cleveland three days ago, off to Africa in three days more. Nice to have one last Super Bowl here at home before moving abroad because they’re really not the same abroad at all.
No Superbowl for us as we have never really cared for professional sports, or really TV for that matter. It’s just another great day in Pacific Northwest to enjoy the outdoors and do projects.
@Yvette Ha! Hope you enjoyed your last Super Bowl before heading abroad. It’s sure not the same abroad. Sorry your team didn’t win, but there is always next year. 😉 Congrats on your new degree & trip to Africa!
Brett- well you are indeed a rare American & most love TV and professional sports. 😉 I’ve never really understood the love of either, but I grew up with brothers and a dad who loved football etc.

I got up early here in Kampot, Cambodia to go to a Super Bowl party with a bunch of expats. Of course, with the time difference, we go together at 6:30am.
With 2 minutes left in the game, the cable scrambles.
It was like it was planned!
Ha, Kevin! That is funny and I think typical of the slow traveler/expat/ digital nomad frustrations about sports that has changed my husbands passion for them. 😉
