Americans House Hunting in Spain, Home Buying Abroad
July 19, 2022
Have you ever wanted to live in Spain, spend winters in Spain, or live a van life in Europe or retire around the world or buy a home somewhere abroad? We love the lifestyle in Europe and have spent many years traveling Spain and exploring Europe, so now looking at the possibilities of buying a home in Spain and will share our process with you!! Follow us ( soultravelers3) on our new soultravelers3 Youtube, Instagram, and Tiktok as we will start posting a lot more about our process from start to finish as soon as we get to digital nomad haven Bansko, Bulgaria next week.
We already see buying rural property in Spain is a whole other ballgame from home buying in California and a bit of a "wild west" so one needs to hire bilingual/bicultural real estate lawyers and architects to help the buying process. That said, the dollar is high and prices so much cheaper, so a great time to learn about this.
Since our arrival in early May, we have been focused on our 2 big goals for remodeling our 94 vintage camper and have happily completed painting the van interior and redoing the upholstery and curtains and now loving our bungalow life and camping in Barcelona. The last week of July, we fly out to Bulgaria, and doing 3 months there, Croatia and Montenegro before returning to Spain.
We had planned to go straight back to our old village on the Andalucia coast east of Malaga to rent a home for the winter and look at homes to buy, .......
.....but we are so loving our time here in Barcelona ( which has long been one of our regular "homes" since 2006) that we decided we should look at homes here just to understand the housing market and possibilities.
One gets more for your money in Andalucia, but we were happy to also find some fantastic possibilities in this area too.......
.... ( and some not so great) on our small budget. We looked at old farmhouse style and new modern style and some things in between. Finding a home with 1 to 3 acres is a much, much harder possibility in Spain. Sometimes the land is great, but the house or road to it etc are not good at all.
The drive around the area was fantastic and beautiful, plus it was so surprising to see some of the most pristine, natural landscape in Europe so close to international airports, beaches and hub city. Lakes, mountains, trees, beaches oh my and good roads and mass transit!
What do you want to know about buying a home in Spain? Follow our process here and lots more detailed videos coming soon on Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram.
