Family travel is sometimes all about the food and being a "foodie"! Eating food while traveling whether it is street food, fresh produce , special meals or cooking your own from food shopping at local grocery stores or food markets, can be fun, yummy and educational. We do enjoy tasting local food like we did in Galicia, Prague, Burgundy, Cappadoica to name just a few places we had great meals. We have also found many ways to eat healthy and cheaply while traveling Europe.

We love to buy fresh fruit along the road at fruit stands from time to time. When I took this photo cherries were in season in Barcelona, Spain, so we had been enjoying lots of really delicious cherries. What are your favorite family travel foods on the road?

We are sharing this as a Photo Friday post for Deliciousbaby!

  1. With so many kids, food on the road can get very expensive. I also love finding fruit stands along the way. When we are driving long distances, we take along a bag of almonds or peanuts, some water bottles, and find some sort of fruit for sale (not at all difficult in California) and it is usually cheaper than stopping at some sort of fast food place.
We do a lot of “u-pick” fruit here. The farms are usually very generous allowing the kids to eat as they pick and we come home with some great produce. In fact, in our family roadtrip plans, we hope to visit some u-pick farms in other countries. A great way to meet local families and do some healthy “grocery” shopping at the same time.
Also, an advantage of raw fruits and vegetables while traveling internationally is that they are familiar to the kids.

  2. I can’t survive a trip without fresh fruit, so we always make hunting for some of it from a little market or shop a part of our daily stroll wherever we are. Such a cheap, healthy snack. And it has taken us down some beautiful little side streets!

  3. Kristy – Good tips & sounds like us! We almost always have fruit, almonds & walnuts with us and sometimes they do make a meal! 😉

I think Mozart has picked grapes off the vine for free in almost every country so far. I suppose that comes with growing up on a vineyard, she is use to picking her own. 😉

  4. Nancie – Thanks & they do, don’t they? Yum! I think the street food is even more famous in Asia, so we are looking forward to those explorations and will be starting that journey to the east soon!

  5. We like cherries here in Michigan 😆
I remember having a fresh peach sundae at a roadside stand in upstate New York a few years ago…just diced peaches, fresh from the orchard, atop a little vanilla ice cream. I think that was one of the best things I remember having on a road trip.

  6. We love fresh fruit especially strawberries. My children are still talking about the wonderful strawberries we got at a roadside stand while on vacation in San Diego California. The owners had a cooler at the stand so we could wash them right away. They were so sweet and juicy, we didn’t even make it to the car with our pint.
