Family Travel Paris: Notre Dame Photo
July 12, 2011
Family travel in Europe means not missing some of the gorgeous churches. This photo of Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral is taken from the left bank on a beautiful summer day and shows it encircled by roses.
We even had a private Paris tour guide during this visit to Notre Dame!
We've been to the Notre Dame quite a few times on our family world trip, including last summer, but it always impresses. It's one of the most popular tourist icons in Paris, considered one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture in Europe and one of the first buildings in the world to use arched exterior supports ( called flying buttress). Who can see it and also not think about the hunchback of Notre Dame?
We've seen a lot of beautiful churches in Europe, like Granada's Cathedral; Istanbul's Ayasofya (Saint Sophia) is amazing; The Basilica of St. Mark in Venice has stunning mosaics; Seville's Cathedral where Columbus is buried is gigantic; the Prague Cathedrals are filled with music; Portugal's Alcobaca Cathedral is serene; pilgrims go to the famous Santiago de Compostela ; a Michelangelo is in Brugge, at the Church of Our Lady; St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna is a Gothic masterpiece; Austria's Stift Melk is perhaps the prettiest; and Barcelona's famous Sagrada Familia by Gaudi is unique as is the Mezquita in Cordoba.
What is your favorite church in Europe?

My fav is the Madeleine in Paris by the Opera House. So many churches have similar architecture and sorrowful statues...this church so unique and artwork uplifting...love it.
