Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai - Luxury Legend - Review

The Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai is a legendary luxurious art deco masterpiece that took our breath away! It's an absolutely exquisite hotel located at the best and most famous address in this ultra glamorous city, on the Huangou River at the corner of the Bund and Nanjing Lu. Shanghai was once known as Paris of the East and today it is one of the richest and most vibrant cities in the world.
The jaw-dropping dazzling view of the renowned Bund and extraordinary Pudong across the river, wowed even super seasoned world travelers like us. Many say that Shanghai has the world's best skyline and the peerless Peace Hotel and its elegant Cathay Room Restaurant and Terrace is the finest place to see and experience this futuristic architectural eye-candy with massive use of neon, even on the boats floating by. Some say this beloved landmark is the closest one will ever get to dining at the imperial Court.
The Fairmont Peace Hotel is old world luxury at it's best and the history of this hotel overshadows that of any others in the Far East. This was the most glamorous hotel in the 1930's where Noel Coward wrote his play "Private Lives", and guests like Charlie Chaplin and Bernard Shaw visited with flamboyant creator Sir Victor Sassoon. It feels almost like time travel as Fairmont has done a flawless restoration using the finest marble, gilt and bronze. We found it a masterful combination of opulence from the past with ultra modern amenities.
True to every Fairmont Hotel we have been to ( San Francisco, Singapore, and Beijing), the service was impeccable. We want to give a special thanks to Cherry Yu who went out of her way to make sure we had a dazzling time and warm, enthusiastic hotel General Manager Christophe Le Chatton. One can really sense the Fairmont family feeling and aim to please in every aspect of customer service.
The 1,600 square meter Octogonal hall and glass rotunda near the lobby embraces you with a vast yellow glass roof that allows the sunshine to softly shine on the ivory Italian marble floor and the large silver-leaf coated sculptural relief artwork along the walls with images of the ancient Bund landscape.
Every detail is perfection personified
from the chic Jasmine Lounge where you can enjoy a superb high tea
to the details on your door or every architectural piece in the building.
Our room was huge, a perfect blend of new and old, so comfortable and inviting.
I got immense pleasure just lying in bed soaking up the romantic atmosphere. I felt like we had some how magically escaped into the Great Gasby world of Old Shanghai amongst the art deco style furnishings with every modern convenience.
Look at that gorgeous claw-foot tub with bath side LCD screen, perfect for a bubble bath after touring around town! Not to mention the huge marble shower and plenty of room for all of us with tons of closet space.
We were blessed to visit on Thanksgiving weekend, and we started the first night in the meticulously refurbished Peace Hall which was once the heart of those extravagant galas and Parisian fashion shows in the twenties and thirties.
Wow! The timeless grandeur continues today and our 12 year old daughter loved every moment of this living history and high style.
Natural light filters in through the windows in this spacious hall with it's crystal chandeliers and sprung wooden dance floor.
Best of all, we had a scrumptious dinner by Master Chef ( from the famous TV show in China) and Farimont's chef, Steven Liu who did a marvelous demonstration of his renown cooking style with his signature dishes and Mozart even got to help. That story is coming soon!
The best beef I ever ate which was grass fed from Mongolia, was part of the meal and also regularly available from the ornate Cathay Restaurant.
The view is mesmerizing.
As are the many decorative touches around the hotel,
from lalique crytal glass and golden lights to
the world famous Jazz Bar. Every where you look there is more to take in and admire.
DaVinci is a super Jazz fan, so you see him here ordering a drink and loving the exclusive club with it's legendary band that instantly carries guests back to the private clubs of the 20's and 30's.
Ohhhh and the food, Mozart is still talking about the incredible spreads at the Peace Hotel's Gold Executive Club which our guests, Google's Elliot Ng and family also commented on. ( That story coming soon).
One of the best dinners on our world trip so far
and constant delights morning, noon and night.
The complementary deluxe Gold Executive Floor breakfast was outstanding.
We were surprised and delighted to run into innovative Chef J.W. Foster, who stopped by to chat. He is the same fascinating eco-friendly chef that we met at the San Francisco Fairmont. We loved the roof garden and bee -keeping he did there and he will be up to creating similar things at the Peace Hotel.
This was such a great way to start the day before exploring Shanghai and the water villages nearby.
I loved all the healthy choices and let Mozart indulge in a bit of all of it to her hearts content, since it was so tempting.
By day or night,
visiting the newest skyscrapers or the oldest tea room in Shanghai, it is a city that will surely impress you
