Chinese New Year ( or Lunar New Year/ Spring Festival) is HUGE in Asia, bigger than Christmas or Thanksgiving at home, so a thrilling time to visit.

Our blond 12 year old daughter Mozart is going to a Chinese school to learn Mandarin while we are in Penang ( which has a dominant Chinese community), and she has been chosen again to sing a Mandarin song solo with her large high school choir today. Learning Chinese culture and traditions, along with the language here and in China has been very enriching for all of us.

They only have half a day of school today, mostly celebrations and start a
two weeks vacation as it is a 15 day holiday and most go home for
extended family dinners and traditional celebrations.

Even singer Psy
from Gangnam style is going to do a free concert at her school for
Chinese New Year and there will be dragon dances, fireworks and festivals galore.

Last year we dragons celebrated in China, earlier we did 3 generations travel in a rabbit year,  and now this 2013 Year of the Snake, should be exciting for Davinci who was born in a snake year.

Southeast Asia’s largest temple, Kek Lok Si in Penang with be lit up again with 10,000 lanterns, 10,000 Buddhas, 230,000 decorative lights.

We’re looking forward to celebrating with the 1.5 billion people in Asia who participate in this most important and biggest Chinese holiday celebrating family, joy, gratitude and prosperty!

Have you ever celebrated Chinese New Year in Asia?
